In the music room during the month of October, our featured composer was Eric Whitacre. Mr. Whitacre is a grammy-winning composer and is arguably one of the most famous composers alive today. His concert music has been performed around the world by millions of musicians. He also created several Virtual Choirs, which have united singers from over 110 different countries. In October, students listened to Whitacre’s famous piece titled October. It was a beautiful moment to watch kindergarten through fifth grade students close their eyes and listen to the music. We opened our eyes and discussed how the music made us feel and the images we saw in our heads. We also talked about how we all hear music differently and see different images. Finally, I had students draw these images and put their feelings onto paper. I am so proud of these students and their creations!
Last week, I sent a photo to Mr. Whitacre and explained our project to him. I have some exciting news--he responded! He wrote how touched and honored he was by their work and to “send all of them my warmest regards.”
Congratulations to all students for your hard work and beautiful creations in music class!
